Eugene Mueller

Eugene may have grown up around science and scientists, what with his
father's tenured position in the CalTech physics department, but he didn't
expect to become one. His grades were poor, largely because he never showed
his work. He spent far less time studying than he did idolizing his outgoing
older brother Neil, watching NASCAR on TV, and defending himself against
school bullies. The third time he showed up for dinner sporting a shiner,
his father took the pipe from between his lips, stared hard at Eugene, and
said, "You're going to learn to defend yourself."

He eventually did, thanks to an aging pugilist his dad knew, but that wasn't
what changed the course of his life. Dr. Harrison did that, during Eugene's
first year at Pasadena City College. "I don't know how you're solving these
problems," he said, "and I don't care." Three months later Harrison had run
out of physics to teach Eugene. Three months after *that* Eugene was at MIT.
And five years later Eugene had a shiny new Ph.D. and a job offer from the
NSA.

The problem was, he didn't work well with others, he couldn't explain what
he was doing, and he had the bad habit of working on what interested him
instead of what interested his employer. The NSA handed him off to NASA, who
handed him to the Army Research Lab, who foisted him off on Lawrence
Livermore National Lab, who thought DARPA would be the perfect place for
Eugene....
